As a certified New Yorker, I am pretty devastated to hear that one of the city’s most consistent supplier of fashion-forward items whose price points honestly made me swell up with joy is ending its illustrious run by the end of October.
As a persistently adventurous shopper, moving to NYC encouraged my habit for hunting down bargains all in the name of not wanting to sacrifice my penchant for the finer things in life just because of my unpredictable and shaky financial status. Daffy’s was my first entrée into the treasure island that housed designer gems that I could afford without blinking an eye or wrecking havoc on my bank account. It was an addiction that grew even more intense after I discovered other lairs that offered the same gratifying experience. Sadly, two of those stores (Filene’s Basement and Syms) have also waved the white flag and have become a distant memory. But I have to say that after wading through the determinedly eager crowds this past Sunday, at Century 21, I am fairly certain the Queen Bee will continue to reign supreme.
I am pretty nostalgic when I recall how Daffy’s provided the perfect training ground when it came to my ability to effortlessly juggle Gucci sunglasses and a Marc Jacobs pinafore.
The idea that after October my ability to dash in for a cute summer dress for my niece and dash out with two pairs of shoes, a handbag and 4 tops imported from Italy will no longer be a reality is hard to grasp.
Rumors of financial strife had been swirling for quite sometime and it looks like the very formula that the retail chain employed and brilliantly executed, ended up being the road to liquidationville.
I guess all good things come to an end and its only natural that outdated business models die out to make room for new implants.
Cheers to Daffy’s! We will always have New York!
