Fashion News: Katy Perry's costumes can be dangerous 14-07-2012

Katy Perry's over-the-top costumes have gotten the attention of her liability insurance company, which reportedly has ordered her to stop wearing spinning objects on her bosom after her hair got caught in a pair of twirling peppermints on an outfit similar to this one. [Styleite]

The Telegraph reports that medical experts say there's been an upswing in the number of injuries to men caused by wearing too-tight jeans. [Telegraph]

"The Exorcist " is plenty spooky stuff, as anyone who has read the book by William Peter Blatty or seen the 1973 William Friedkin film knows (that's the one where Linda Blair's head spins around, in case you forgot -- as unlikely as that is). But no one looked at all scared on Wednesday night at an afterparty celebrating the opening night performance of the new stage version, directed by John Doyle at L.A.'s Geffen Playhouse. Stars Richard Chamberlain and Brooke Shields were all aglow, as was novelist Blatty, playwright John Pielmeier and magician Teller. Yes, Teller. He served as a creative consultant, teaching how to make a body levitate from a bed. [Society News LA]

Nikki Reed of "Twilight" fame -- she plays Rosalie Hale -- is collaborating on a capsule jewelry collection with Glamhouse.com, which specializes in jewelry designed by artists, celebrities and what they call "style icons." The collection was announced in a news release on Thursday and will be called Mattlin Era. It's to go on sale this fall.

Nordstrom plans to open departments offering clothes from British retailer Topshop in 14 U.S. stores in September. And lucky for us Southern Californians -- two of them reportedly will be here. One will be at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa and the other at the Irvine Spectrum in Irvine. Plans are still underway for a full-on Topshop store at the Grove in Los Angeles in 2013. [Racked]

Katie Holmes' next move: Fashion, films or both? 13-07-2012

Tom Cruise, 50, and Katie Holmes, 33, settled their divorce Monday, less than two weeks after Holmes stunned Hollywood with the news that she planned to divorce one of the most famous men in the business.
The speedy settlement was preceded by a statement from the soon-to-be-exes: "We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents."
PHOTOS: Tom and Katie: The way they were
By settling so quickly, Holmes and Cruise avoided a potentially nasty legal battle that could have cast even more scrutiny on their already highly watched seven-year relationship.
Howard Bragman, vice chairman of Reputation.com and a longtime Hollywood publicist, says there are several factors that make the lightning-fast settlement a little less shocking. "Number one: There was a prenup. Number two: Her father is an attorney. Number three: It was in both their interests to resolve quickly. Number four: They both want to move on. And, Number five: There were not that many issues left to resolve, especially if you have a prenup in place."
Now that Holmes is one step closer to being officially single, she is starting over with a fresh slate in both her personal and professional life, all of which should be a positive for her, adds Bragman.
"She's going to be interesting now, she's going to get a boost from this because she looks independent, normal. She fought for her child, and people can relate to her. There is no better launching pad."
And in her second act, Holmes will most likely blend acting with fashion, says Janice Min, editorial director of the Hollywood Reporter and former editor of Us Weekly.
"My sense is, her passion is fashion. It's going to take her a while to get her legs back in terms of being considered as just Katie Holmes," says Min. "I could see her doing some interesting cameos on good shows. I could see her doing another hour-long drama. She's not quite as established enough as a major film star to carry a movie, but one day she could be."
Beyond a love of fashion, what else could be in the pipeline for Holmes? Experts weigh in on three aspects of her life — professional, personal and romantic.
PROFESSIONAL: An assessment is in order
Holmes' career hasn't exactly gone gangbusters since hooking up with Cruise in 2005.
The former Dawson's Creek star's most recent movie was last year's universally panned Adam Sandler comedy Jack and Jill, and her last hit was 2005's Batman Begins.
"When analyzing a career, there are many, many contributory factors, not just one. Usually at the core of great success is great drive - relentless, maniacal drive combined with great talent. She may not have been that driven, we don't know," says veteran Hollywood publicist Michael Levine.
Shortly after filing for divorce, Holmes filmed a guest spot on the Lifetime reality show Project Runway. But Levine says Holmes is capable of landing a bigger role.
"First, she has to figure out what all actors should do, which is assess where they are and where they want to be in five years and take steps based on reverse engineering to help them be where they want to be," Levine says. "If they want to be movie stars, choose parts, small or large, that get them there. If they want to be movie stars, don't choose reality TV shows. … Any fool with a plan beats a wandering genius. I would encourage her to get a plan based on where she wants to be."
Holmes did find some laughs opposite Josh Radnor during a guest appearance last fall on CBS' How I Met Your Mother. But can she carve a career out of humor?
"We have yet to see her really expand. I don't know whether or not Katie is funny," says casting director Doron Ofir, who's responsible for casting Jersey Shore. "To be a dramatic actress is a relatively easy thing to do, because drama is inherently part of the human nature. To be funny is another one. We don't know her."
Building heat on television could buoy her in the pop culture landscape, and fans are already calling for Holmes to spark a mini-reunion on ABC's Don't Trust the B—in Apt. 23, which stars her Dawson's Creek pal James Van Der Beek (he plays himself). The network was unavailable for comment.
Mini-arcs are trending in Hollywood, says Deadline's Pete Hammond. "I think (Holmes) can do what Gwyneth Paltrow did on Glee if there's a good role out there."
Whichever path Holmes chooses with acting, there's no need to rush into anything advises Bragman.
"First thing she has to do is get beyond this. She shouldn't feel in a rush to get a project," he says. "She's done film, TV, live theater. She should do something that really moves (her) soul, either the medium or the part. There's going to be intense scrutiny no matter what she does, so the only right answer is what's right for her."
After Nicole Kidman's 2001 divorce from Cruise, the statuesque Aussie went on to win an Oscar the next year for her work in The Hours.
Not bad - and not too far off the mark for Holmes, Ofir believes.
"I think that we are about to see what we saw with Nicole Kidman. The second that she was free, she exploded. It was literally one after the other after the other. It was Moulin Rouge, then The Others, then The Hours. She was sought after, and, now she is one of our golden actresses of the time. If Katie can realize that this is the beginning of her life as a legitimate actress and she chooses her roles incredibly carefully, she will become in that same vein."
And fashion is always an option, too. Women's Wear Daily reports that Holmes and her stylist Jeanne Yang will show their Holmes & Yang line at New York Fashion Week in September.
PERSONAL: Don't hide, get outside
No need to uncover any rocks to find Holmes during this celeb split. She's avoided the whole hiding-in-my-apartment-to-dull-the-pain approach and instead has been out and about in New York, taking her daughter Suri, 6, for very public and very photographed trips to the grocery store, for ice cream and to a children's museum.
Bragman says the anti-bunker approach is the way to go in this situation. "When you hide, it looks as if you have something to hide from. It sends the wrong message that says, 'I'm hiding,'" he says. "All these everyday things (she's been doing) endear her in the hearts of people, make her look normal, and that's what you want right now."
And, in an era of back doors and private elevators for Hollywood's biggest names, it's clear that Holmes could stay out of the public eye - if she wanted to.
"That only creates demand, and what you don't want to do is create too much demand," adds Bragman. "If there are a lot of pictures, they're worth less (to paparazzi). If she never goes out and there's just one picture of her out, it's worth hundreds of thousands (of dollars). If any tourist with a phone can snap you walking down Fifth Avenue, it's worth a nickle."
Min agrees.
"She is making an aggressive attempt to appear normal," Min says. "She seems confident and unrattled, living her life day-to-day as a normal mother. It conveys to Tom Cruise's side that she's not in hiding and not afraid."
But outings and interviews are not the same thing. Min predicts that anyone waiting for Holmes' tell-all chat about her five-year marriage will be holding their breath for quite some time.
"Very likely she'll keep (interviews) in the realm of fashion. She'll do the cover of a fashion magazine. Anyone expecting the big tell-all, I don't see a universe where that happens," says Min. "It doesn't benefit her to make it seem like she's telling tales out of school. For better or worse, she was part of Scientology during this marriage. She didn't get much of a career bounce out of being married to Tom Cruise. She doesn't gain by being too brutally honest about the marriage or Scientology."
ROMANCE: Love should wait
Like all celebrity divorces, after the legal dust has cleared, fans are eager to see newly single stars coupled up once again. And perhaps no future relationships will be more closely watched than those of Holmes and Cruise.
"She's in the image business. People will talk and talk about her, no matter what she does. If she has coffee with a guy, people will have them involved in an affair," says relationship expert Gilda Carle. "She's going to have to be strong enough to laugh all this off. … I think it's a good idea for her to wait six months (to start dating), until she's actively certain that she has her footing and she can balance her life on her own."
Plus, after the enthusiastically public nature of her romance with Cruise, Holmes may consider going in the opposite direction by keeping her private life a little more private and engaging in some self-reflection.
"She needs to figure out how she ended up in the boat she ended up in, and what she's going to do to change her taste in men," adds Carle. "She's coming into her own. She seemed robotic with (Cruise). She has just started realizing that she has power. She can go and do as she pleases. This is a huge, rude awakening for her. She has to be comfortable with her empowerment and be comfortable as a single mom and as a woman who can earn a living."

Qatari group buys fashion house Valentino 13-07-2012

A Qatari investment group has agreed to buy Italian fashion house Valentino for an undisclosed sum, the London-based private equity form which controls the luxury label said on Thursday.
"Mayhoola for Investments SPC, an investment vehicle backed by a major private investor group from Qatar, has agreed to acquire Valentino Fashion Group SpA," Permira said in a statement.
Permira did not disclose the identity of the buyer or the price tag but British media recently reported that Qatar's royal family was in talks to buy the label for about £550-600 million (700-755 million euros, $850-930 million).
Valentino chief executive Stefano Sassi said he was "delighted".
"During the past few years, despite swings in the luxury markets, the company has operated with great intensity and remained focused on maximising the potential of the Valentino brand.
"This effort should drive a 60-percent increase in revenues from 2009 to 2012. Our new shareholder will help us to reach our full potential," he said.
A brand favoured by Hollywood actresses, Valentino was founded by Paris-trained Valentino Garavani in Rome in 1960 and won international fame early on when he designed the wedding dress for Jacqueline Onassis in 1968.
More recent fans include Jennifer Aniston, Keira Knightley and Cameron Diaz.
The fashion house said on its website that it now operates in more than 70 countries with 1,250 points of sale including 66 that are directly managed.
The company had a turnover of 322.4 million euros in 2011.
The 80-year-old Valentino has now retired although he still makes frequent appearances on the global celebrity circuit. The fashion house's current creative directors are Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Fashion Designers Set Trends For 'Made In The USA,' Zooey Deschanel, And Investors 12-07-2012

Don’t underestimate an ambitious southern woman in seersucker. At least, that’s what entrepreneurs Jolie Bensen and Sarah Elizabeth Dewey, founders of the southern-based clothing line Jolie and Elizabeth, have taught me. That, and not to wear seersucker after Labor Day.

Taking advantage of the region’s entrepreneurial spirit and creative energy, the two southern belles founded their clothing line in New Orleans, after moving back from New York, as a means of creating new opportunities for themselves when jobs in the fashion industry were scarce. However, in almost three years, the duo has initiated a new apparel design and manufacturing industry in the south, made a significant economic impact in New Orleans, and did it all by following their own trajectory.

At the company’s second year mark, the designers reached fascinating milestones, including nationwide recognition and a 65% revenue increase with $250,000 of it going back into New Orleans’ economy. Their story is not one of luck or overnight success, but one of lessons learned, hard work, and patience.

The ladies first conceptualized their new venture over lunch in September of 2009, agreeing that their brand should reflect their vision by including both of their names in the company’s identity, and that they would focus on keeping their company vertically integrated and manufacture all their clothing in the USA – a valuable concept they picked up while working together at BCBG’s corporate office in New York. Bensen and Dewey also decided that they would initially seek financial help from an investor to get the ball rolling on their project. They both saw that the biggest value in attaining an investor would be the financial guidance they would receive, as well as the security of starting their business without getting into serious financial problems.

Their search began online, creating profiles on various funding platforms that offer matchmaking opportunities for startups and investors. After reviewing the responses and meeting with several candidates, they landed on a locally based investor from New York, who, after making it big in the dot com boom, had moved to New Orleans to help finance up-and-coming startups.

“We thought it was a perfect match because he got New Orleans, had invested in other companies run by young owners, and understood the urgency of New York and the fashion industry,” said Bensen, and, with their views aligned, they started working with their new investor that November.

According to Bensen and Dewey, the mutually beneficial relationship with their investor started out smoothly. He helped them finalize their business plan, advised them on their accounting and budget projections, and registered Jolie and Elizabeth, LLC, of which he owned a 40% stake. However, within months, the designers started to realize that the easy access to funding came at the expense of losing control of their vision. Recalling that their investor continuously devalued their abilities and challenged their creative decisions, the tension increasingly heightened until April when the designers decided to buy him out for three times the amount he had invested into the company. At this point, not even one dress had been produced.

“We found ourselves sending him daily, long threaded emails that justified certain aspects of our business that should not be justifiable,” said Bensen, explaining that, with fashion and trends constantly fluctuating, there is often no right or wrong decision. Having to validate every creative choice ultimately became inefficient and redundant, and the disagreements put a strain on their ability to produce their first collection.

The tipping point came when the investor, and self proclaimed graphic designer, presented Bensen and Dewey with the company’s website. It was a one page static site, delivered to them months behind schedule, skewed from their original vision, and modeled after that of another company, a restaurant, that he was also funding. Besides misrepresenting the brand, the investor included himself in the company bio, taking a large amount of creative and financial responsibility for the brand and its mission.

“After that point, it really made us realize how much we loved and valued our company, and how much potential we saw in this,” explained Bensen.

The purchase of the investor’s share of the company reimbursed him for two sets of business cards, the company logo, a shoddy website, gas money that partially covered Bensen’s trip to meet with a factory in Dallas, and a 300 percent interest rate that he appointed. Covering the cost with money they borrowed from their families, it was a price they were happy to pay.

Kim Kardashian Ordered Ex-Hubby Kris Humphries To Not Ruin Her Photo Ops 12-07-2012

During the time that Kim Kardashian was with her estranged husband Kris Humphries, the E! reality star would order the 6'9 NBA star to get out of the way when photographers were snapping pics of the couple, because she wanted the press to be able to see her stylish outfits, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.

"Kris plans on testifying at the upcoming divorce trial that Kim would often tell him to get out of the shot when photographers would descend upon them," a source close to the situation tells RadarOnline.com. "Kim would complain that because of Kris' height, he was blocking the photographers clear shot of her. Kim would get very upset if he didn't move quickly enough. The reason for doing this -- so that the press could get an unobstructed view of Kim's outfit. Kim would pore over what the press was writing about her, and she would become upset if her picture didn't look good."

Meanwhile, as we previously reported, Humphries' gal pal, Myla Sinanaj, cast serious doubts Monday on reports that she is pregnant. "Uhhh ooooo Loook No babyy bump! #Shocker yes I'm a thick curvy girl *All natural I'm comfortable in my skin. What because I don't have fake boobs, fake ass, lipo, cellulite & laser treatments I'm fat? F*ck Yall! I'm natural baby! Worry bout the fake! This is something I should have done a long time ago but I thought keeping quiet & ignoring was best but enough is enough," she wrote on Twitter.

Myla is scheduled to be deposed in the bitter divorce battle between Kardashian and Humphries in the next two weeks. Kris' deposition took place in Minnesota two weeks ago, and Kardashian's is going to take place in the next several weeks.

Contrary to popular belief...

HG and I did not get into a fight and decided to stop working together on I am Fashion and started our own blogs instead. (Even our mutual friends wondered about it!) We still email each other daily about the intricate details of our lives and random thoughts we have, and feel extremely empty when the other is away and has no access to the internet. When I freak out, she is the first person I call and she is still my maid of honor when I fantasize about my wedding. Our reasons for closing down I am Fashion still stands, though I do think that my later rationalization of it in this blog is a better articulation of how we feel.

As for us continuing to blog even more regularly than before, I attribute it to the "newness" of our blogs. Starting a new blog is like starting a relationship. At the beginning everything is new and exciting as you get to know the other person and watch your relationship grow and mature. Every up and every down is a significant moment. Then the honeymoon phase eventually wears off and you reach a happy medium, where your relationship becomes a part of your daily life. With any luck, you will live happily ever after in this state with a few surprises here and there to spice up the norm. If not, your relationship will wane and you grow apart, eventually deciding that you are both better off parting ways.

Clearly I'm in the honeymoon phase. We are starting to explore new things together, trying to figure out what works best for the both of us. Every new post is an adventure. Every comment and email is exciting. I want to spend every moment of everyday with it, checking on its progress i.e. stalking the traffic, the incoming and outgoing links etc. It's an exhilarating feeling that I'd almost forgotten about!

Analogy aside, it is heartwarming to read everyone's encouraging comments and to know that we were able to leave a small footprint on some people's lives. We appreciate your support and remember that we've not left the blogging world for good. Come visit us some time at our new blogs -(Find the links to our new blogs in the post below). We miss you guys!
